WHAT STANDARD FORM MEANS
Scientific notation for large and small values.
DEFINITION
Standard form writes a number as a × 10^n. The first number is at least 1 and less than 10.
WHAT THIS PAGE DOES
It converts ordinary numbers to standard form, scientific notation to normal numbers, and e notation such as 4.2e-3.

Move the decimal point and count places.
HOW IT WORKS
Move the decimal point until one non-zero digit is before it. The number of moves becomes the power of ten.
STANDARD FORM → NORMAL
Positive powers move right, negative powers left.
POSITIVE POWERS
Positive powers make larger numbers. For example, 3 × 10^8 = 300000000.
NEGATIVE POWERS
Negative powers make smaller decimals. For example, 4.2e-3 = 0.0042.
